Where To Explore…
Huntercrook is perfectly situated to various nearby heritage sites and Northumberland National Park. If you’ve got your heart set on Hadrian’s Wall adventures, Huntercrook Lodge & The Duck House are merely a mile away from the fascinating Roman fort of Vindolanda, and nearby to Housesteads and Roman Army Museum at Walltown Crags and promises an unforgettable day.
We also highly recommend the eight miles circular walk from Housesteads Fort to Steel Rigg, which will reward you with beautiful panoramic views of the Northumbrian countryside. Follow the trail along to Sycamore Gap for a sight of real living history, or wrap up warm on our balcony and see our dark skies come to life before your eyes. The ideal base for exploring; Huntercrook promises an unforgettable stay whether you’re walking or cycling.
The pretty market towns of Hexham, Corbridge and Carlisle are easily accessible by car from Huntercrook Lodge & The Duck House, for an afternoon browsing the local shops, art galleries and tearooms here. Head further north and discover Kielder Forest and lake – an area of outstanding natural beauty famed for its protected Dark Skies and newly built award-winning observatory.
“Walking a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall up to sycamore gap, is our favourite spot. Vindolanda is just a few fields away and a lovely walk from the Lodge. Archaeologists are excavating daily and find new Roman artefacts regularly. Housesteads Roman fort is also a favourite go-to spot, before ending the day with a glass of prosecco on the balcony.”
